Job Description:

The VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System (VAEKHCS) is currently recruiting for a primary care physician at our Topeka VA Medical Center (1 hour from Kansas City). Board certification (preferred) or board eligibility in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. You will be responsible for providing primary care for a diverse group of veterans. Clinical duties include providing primary care medical services in outpatient clinics, providing inpatient/emergency care, providing inpatient/outpatient coverage, back up coverage for the emergency room, taking calls for inpatient coverage, and responsibilities may include supervision of a mid-level provider. You will contribute to the achievement of quality care standards, write orders for diagnostic testing, prescribe medications, take calls for inpatient coverage, consult with specialty services and utilize computerized/electronic medical records. Also, the selectee will provide patient care in accordance with professional standards, core values and commitment to service excellence. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required and Basic Life Support/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (BLS/CPR) required. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Call Schedule: 1 out of every 6-10 weekends
Office Hours: 8 4:30 , M-F
patients per day/week: 10-14 per day
Patient expectations: Manages panel of 1,050-1,200 diverse adult veteran patients with varied medical conditions Student Loan Repayment: The selected applicant for this position may be eligible to apply for an education loan reimbursement award under the provisions of the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP)

Number of provider staff in the department: 1 Service Line Chief, 10 physicians including locum tenens physicians, 4 mid-level providers

VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits; 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension); and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
How is the pension funded? VA employees hired after January 1, 2014 automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 8.3% of the employees salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 12.7% of the employees salary
Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2014, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $17,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $23,000
The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
Disability Retirement
Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
