The Care Companion provides companionship, light meal preparation, and home cleaning tasks and personal care as regulations allow to assigned patients/participants. This position is supervised as designated on the agency organizational chart.

Employment Status: Full-time

Typical Hours of Employment: Monday-Friday 9a-5p

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Utilizes effective communication skills to act as a companion and provide emotional support to patients and caregivers.
  • Utilizes interpersonal skills that promote interdisciplinary collaboration and communication.
  • Establishes therapeutic relationships with patients and families from a variety of cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Works cooperatively with the family/caregiver in providing care to the participant.
  • Is sensitive to the stressors experienced by colleagues.
  • Communicates client changes to team members.
  • Seeks opportunities for professional growth, including demonstrating the ability to accept direction from professional staff of all disciplines and to receive constructive performance feedback.
  • Pursues professional growth through the continuing education process.
  • Assists in other areas of the Midland organization as may be needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Maintains flexibility in schedule and responds to unexpected patient care needs and changes in workload and location of work as directed.
  • Performs and/or assists the patient with personal care activities as directed and in the plan of care
  • Performs and/or assists the patient/family with home maintenance activities including but not limited to light housekeeping and meal preparation.
  • Performs household services, which are essential to enable the client to remain at home. Examples: changing soiled bed linens, dusting, sweeping, personal laundry, vacuuming, washing floors, purchasing groceries, running errands.
  • Prepares meals using diet instructions from the nurse, i.e. regular, diabetic diet, low cholesterol diet, low salt diet.
  • Performs support activities including but not limited to supporting independence, providing companionship, and providing respite for families.
  • Documents in the Medical Record.
  • Attends and participates in scheduled staff meetings and client care meetings as requested.
  • Maintains flexibility in schedule and responds to unexpected patient care needs and changes in workload and location of work as directed.
  • Informs the Supervisor of unusual occurrences.


  • Seeks opportunities to participate in marketing and fundraising activities.


  • Reports changes in the clients condition or family situation and records observations.
  • Articulates and consistently uses standard precautions and specialized personal protective gear as appropriate to patient diagnosis.
  • Maintain competencies in the ability to perform patient care tasks.
  • Responsible for proper cleaning of durable medical equipment as necessary.
  • Documents care provided and the response of the patient/family per agency policy.
  • Participates in departmental and/or agency-wide quality improvement activities.
  • Functions within limitations as described in the plan of care.
  • Recognizes own limits and seeks help and guidance from Supervisor as appropriate.


  • Follows agency procedures/standards for productivity, attendance, use of PTO and approval of overtime.
  • Manages time effectively to encompass direct patient care, meetings, continuing education and documentation of care delivery.
  • Utilizes supplies and equipment economically.
